How to Convert JPG to WebP (and Back)
WebP is an image format from Google that usually makes files smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. It is widely supported on websites, but some older programs still cannot open it.
What WebP does
WebP can store photos with lossy compression, like JPG, and graphics with lossless compression, like PNG. It also supports transparency. For websites, a WebP photo is often noticeably smaller than the JPG it replaces, which helps pages load faster.
When to convert to WebP
- Images on your own website or blog, where the browser supports WebP.
- Large image libraries where smaller files save storage and bandwidth.
When to keep JPG or PNG
- Files you send to printers, older software or clients who may not open WebP.
- Platforms that only accept JPG or PNG uploads.
How to convert
- Open the Image Converter.
- Choose your JPG, PNG or WebP file.
- Pick WebP as the output. A quality of 80 to 90 is a good starting point for photos.
- Download the result and compare it with the original at full size.
Keep the original
Converting a lossy file again, for example JPG to WebP and back, adds another round of quality loss. Store the original, and convert from it when you need a new format.
